Saltaire United Reform Church
This is the united reformed church set in saltaire and here are some intresting facts about this church:
In 1859 was when this church was Built by Sir Titus Salt
The existing organ built by Peter Conacher and Co. of Huddersfield, was installed in 1890
1972 – Congregational & Presbyterian Church’s joined to for the United Reform Church.
In 1991 the Church organ was last rebuilt by Michael Fletcher, a local organ builder, now the church organist.
2011 – The current Minister, Paul Breeze, leaves the church which has been without a Minister since then, at which the church is currently run by elders.
Saltaire united Reform Church is now one of 1800 local United Reform Churches, in England, Scotland & Wales.
Hirst Lock-Weir-Mill
Although there isn’t much to know about hirst lock there is quite a bit of history surrounding the area, the 1st Mill was Built on the Aire over 400 years ago, the 2nd Mill was built 1635 by Dixon’s. It was built on the site where Salt’s New Mill stands, The 3rd was built 1745, New Hirst Mill.
It was a small mill, fifty feet square, built expressly for fulling, It stood on a ledge of level ground between the river & Hirst Wood, The ruins of this mill & its successors can be found midway between the canal aqueduct & the railway bridge.
Shipley Wharf
Shipley wharf Located directly above Shipley Lock & used for the transhipment of coal from the Shipley Collieries, During the 19th century Shipley Colieries, then owned by the Miller-Mundy family along with the Erewash Valley railway line was used for the purpose of transporting coal. This took place between 1848 & 1870 , Problems with the Nutbrook Canal's water supply instigated the re-laying of rails on the incline and its extension under the Midland Railway's Erewash Valley line and under the Midland Railway's Eastwood Colliery branch line, to Shipley Wharf. Coal was loaded into narrowboats here from 1895 until 1942, Many different types of boats are now moored at Shipley Wharf and boat rides can be taken up and down the canal from the Wharf.
Salts & New Mill
Salts Mill was opened 1853, it was the biggest factory in the world, It had 3000 workers, 1200 looms & produced 30,000 yards of cloth every day, Over the next 25 years Salt built housing, a church, schools and almshouses for his workforce, In 1980 – Over the years the textile industry declined and by 1980 the mill had become virtually redundant, 1987 – Jonathon Silver purchased the mill, which was in a state of poor repair. By his death 10 years later he had transformed it into a bustling centre for commerce which included the 1853 Hockney Art Galleries.
The (Early) Music Shop (Saltaire)
The world’s largest early music instrument specialist, Formerly part of Woods Music Shop in Bradford, it Moved to prestigious new showroom at Salts Mill in 2007, Its showrooms occupy 3000sq ft of floor space, It is the official exclusive UK distributor and agent for Moeck recorders, and is also the appointed UK dealer for Küng recorders, Bizzi harpsichords, Mollenhauer recorders, Lu Mi viols, Camac harps and others.
The Warehouse (Saltaire)
In 1873 When the Leeds and Liverpool Canal Carrying Company regained the right to transport cargo along the canal in 1873, it was found that warehousing was particularly lacking at Shipley a year later The 1st section of this long range of Grade II Listed wool warehouses was built, 1893 The 2nd section of this range of warehouses was built, Although there are two later phases of construction the group of warehouses retains a strongly consistent appearance. The warehouses were renovated in 1995 and are sympathetic to the character of the original buildings.
